Post #10: Three Ideas To Enhance Your Networking Party

July 6, 2016 by Richard 1 Comment

Make your Networking Party something to remember!

networking party orange county magician

Tell me if this sounds familiar:  You hold a big conference.  At the end, you host a networking party, sparing no expense.  You hired the best bartenders and caterers in town.  Drinks are flowing and everyone is having a good time.  There is only one problem.  Your attendees are only talking to people they came with!  Everyone is secluded in their own little groups.  No one is actually “networking.”

This defeats the entire point of having a networking party.  You want your attendees to get their money’s worth.  Here are Three Ideas to help get people interacting with each other.

Photo Scavenger Hunt

You want everyone to have fun, right?  Chances are, everyone has a smart phone.  Create a Instagram hashtag for the event.  Provide a list of selfies.  Here are some examples: take a photo with someone who has a beard, is wearing a Star Wars t-shirt, who is from out of town, who has seven letters or more in their last name, is drinking red wine, who owns a pet, and so on.  All photos need to be with someone else.  Have the attendees upload the photos to their own Instagram accounts using the hashtag and then tag themselves.  When they’ve finished the list, have them bring their phones to a moderator(s) for verification.  Everyone who finishes the list will go into a drawing for a prize.  Make the list easy enough for everyone to win.

This will accomplish two things.  One, it will fun!  Everyone will have to branch out from their own groups.  Two, it is free publicity for the event.  All of their friends and connections will see the photos and tags.  The Scavenger Hunt is not limited to Instagram.  You may use whatever social media platform is most appropriate for your event.

Hire Roaming Entertainment

This is where an entertainer like me would roam around the networking party performing magic for attendees.  If you would like to know more about my services specifically, click HERE.  I would rather give other examples for the time being.  It’s important to choose entertainment that fits the event.  Magic is not always the best fit.

I attended one networking party with a Parisian theme.  The event coordinator hired actors to replicate characters from the movie Moulin Rouge.  There were dancers, poets, and a sitar player!  The actors roamed around the party, interacting with the attendees.  Lots of photos were taken and everyone had a great time.

Another event that I worked was for a vodka company.  They called the event Speakeasy.  I played a card shark.  All of the attendees had to use a password to get in.  This was a lot of fun!

Your networking party doesn’t need to have an elaborate theme to be fun.  The whole point of roaming entertainment is to get the attendees interacting with each other.  Give them an experience worth chatting about.

Secret Identity

This one sounds silly.  But, silly is a good thing – especially if everyone is playing along.  Sometimes, it’s easier for shy people to mingle if they can be someone else.  It’s also a fun guessing game.  The secret identity is a celebrity or famous character written on index cards worn by the attendees.  The attendees have no idea what is written on their own card.  They have to figure it out based on the way other attendees treat them.  The rule is, you can’t say outloud what is written on someone else’s card. But, you can give context clues. For example, if I was given Lady Gaga as my secret identity, you can make comments about my “poker face.”

There are two ways to go about this, depending on how silly you want it to be.  The first way is to taped the index cards to the attendees’ foreheads (I told you it was silly).  The second, less silly, way is to tape the cards to their backs.  An attendee may feel awkward striking up conversation with a stranger.  But, they will have no problem approaching Darth Vader.

Bonus Idea

Have the attendees download a “face swapping” app like MSQRD.  Whoever uploads the most face-swap photos with the proper tags will win a prize!

Conclusion

Whatever you choose to do for your networking party, your attendees are going to have fun!  It’s all about breaking the ice.  Put the “social” back in social network.  Don’t be afraid of silliness.  Make it a game.  But, also make it optional.  You can’t force people to participate.  That takes all the fun out of it.  You can’t force them to have a good time.  They paid to be at the event.  It’s up to them to engage with each other.  You are simply helping with the introduction.

Thanks for reading!  I hope you found these ideas helpful.  If you have anymore ideas, please share them in a comment.

Post #09: How I Price My Magician Services

June 6, 2016 by Richard Leave a Comment

orange county magician

There are many ways for a magician to price their services.  A magician could either charge by the hour, by the service, by the event, or a combination of the three.  I approach every event individually.  In this post, I will pull back the curtain to reveal how I create a quote.  On the front end, what you see when we negotiate, is very simple.  We discuss the event in detail, then I provide a quote.  You either accept, we negotiate further, or we wish each other luck and part ways.  I want to keep the process as simple as I can.  Not everyone can afford me.  There are occasions where a client might need me to break the quote down for their data processor.  I make it simple by breaking down the time and services.  But, a lot more goes into it.

Please keep in mind as you read this I do not hold myself to any particular method.  It is all circumstantial.  Quantifying value is a very difficult thing to do.

Here are something I consider when creating a quote:

There are a few standard things I will not discuss like time and travel.  Though I do factor in time and travel, my quote is based on more important factors.

Learn More About Richard The Magician

  1. Value of the EventWhen I say, “quantifying value,” I am not just talking about the value I place on my services.  I ask questions to determine the value you’ve placed on your event.  The greater the risks, the greater the reward.  There are some cases where hiring the wrong magician could result in termination.  This raises the steaks for both me and the buyer.  Say you are a marketing director looking to hire a magician for a trade show.  The goal of the trade show is generate leads, close deals, and possibly save the company from bankruptcy.  A client in this situation has a lot riding on me doing my job very well.  Like any other job, when you are given more responsibility, you are better compensated.
  2. Customization of ServicesThis is one thing that sets me apart from other magicians.  I have the unique ability to create a custom performance for my clients.  My degree in theatre has given me the tools necessary to write new scripts, build props, tell stories, and improvise.  I want to fashion my performance to your event.  Through our consultation, I access how much customization is necessary.  Some events require more than others.Customizing my services could also mean mixing services for an event.  Rather than charge for each service individually, I take the extra step to determine how my different services can work together for you event.
  3. Types of ServicesSome services automatically have a greater value than others.  Of course, there are exceptions.  My stage show is typically has a higher value than strolling.  But, they could cost the same depending on the event.
  4. Prime Calendar Real EstateI think of my calendar as real estate.  Just like land, there is only so many hours in a day.  A gig at 1pm on a Thursday in March is likely going to be less expensive than a Friday night in December.  It’s about supply and demand.
It is no secret that a magician is busier during the holiday season than the middle of February.  That could also depend on the magician.  My February was actually very business this year.
  5. What I Bring To The TableIt’s important for a professional to know their personal value as well as the value of their services.  I am not selling a product.  I am selling me.If you go to a five-star restaurant, you are going to pay more for a steak than if you go to your local family diner.  Even if you prefer the diner, there is a reason why the steak at the five-star restaurant has a higher value.  The wait staff is highly trained.  They likely have a world class chef overseeing the food.  And then there is the atmosphere!  A lot of time and money went into research and construction to provide the optimal dining experience.

I am like the five-star restaurant.  I did not get to this level by accident.  I sought out the best private university in south Florida, Palm Beach Atlantic University, to receive my education in theatre and communication.  I have spent countless hours studying and training in the art of magical performance.  And, I have educated myself in business so I can provide the optimal magical experience for my clients.

There are other magicians who can perform the same magic tricks as me.  Just like there are other places to buy a steak.  I specialize in the five-star treatment.

There are other factors I take into consideration when creating a quote.  But you won’t have to worry about any of it.  Like a good magic trick, you’ll only see the effect and not the work behind it.  When I provide a quote, it will be an extremely simple process for you.  I can do that because I’ve already done the hard work on the back end.

Common Sense SEO

Common Sense SEO for the Better Business Practitioner

Hey friends! I have not blogged in awhile. Happy to say, I’ve been very busy growing my business. I recently learned some new SEO tactics. My ranking has greatly improved since implementing these tactics. I think it would be beneficial two other magicians and small-business owners alike.

I love the changes Google has made to its SEO algorithm. I call this “Common Sense SEO.” It’s all things you should be doing anyway. It creates a win-win situation. If you follow Google’s guidelines, then you automatically create a better online experience for your customers. This means conversions. More conversions means better SEO ranking.

Google wants to provide a valuable service to its users. If you go on Google and search for something, you expect the listings provided to match your search. The only way Google can assure customer satisfaction to their users is by providing qualified listings. Imagine searching for used cars in your area, but all you got were movie listings for the new Fast and Furious movie. You’d be furious!

It’s all about your content. A website is not just an online brochure. It needs to be an interactive experience for the user. Websites are beginning to replace salespeople. Therefore, the buying experience needs a human touch. When I visit a website, I am immediately turned off if the main page bombards me with information. It’s no different than meeting a salesperson who immediately starts talking a mile a minute, shoving photos in your face. I want my options to be clear and information to be presented to me in a way I can understand. When this happens, I am more likely to click through, read the content, fill out a form, or make a purchase. When those things happen, you rank higher in Google.

There are of course other details like meta descriptions, H1 and H2 headers, image compression, and so on. Those details are super easy to fix. The hard part is providing good content in the first place.

Think of your keywords like the thesis to a good paper. If you were to summarize the content of a single page on your website in three words, those would be your keywords.

I was amazed at how scatterbrained my pages felt when I read them. Luckily, WordPress has a great SEO plugin called Yoast. It will tell you what changes need to be made in order to improve optimization.

Here is a summary of these SEO tactics:

  1. Sum up a Page’s content in only 3 words and make those your keywords.
  2. Place the key words in you’re heading, subheading, page title, and the page’s first paragraph.
  3. Write your content as if you were actually talking to a prospective client.
  4. Anticipate questions they might have and make the information as crystal clear as possible.
  5. Have at least 350 words in the body of the page.

Those are the basics. You also want to optimize your images. Give them very specific titles with very specific meta descriptions. You might also want to consider downloading a plugin for WordPress that will compress images, like Smush.

Once you have these basic things in place, then you can look into hiring someone to help with the finer details. SEO does become more complicated as your business grows. My designer, Josh London, offers a great SEO service. But you should also shop around to find the right person for your needs.

Remember, good, readable content with valuable information equals good SEO.

If you have any questions, comments, or corrections, please leave some comments below. It’s better to leave all comments here so everyone can benefit.
Thank you and good luck!

Post #007: Entertainment In The Classroom

January 24, 2016 by Richard Leave a Comment

Entertainment In The Classroom

I recently read an article in The Atlantic about magician Teller, from Penn and Teller. In the article, Teller talks about (yes he talks) entertainment in the classroom. I found it very interesting. In my last post I wrote about using entertainment in the boardroom. The classroom is even more important!

To read the full article, click HERE.

Teller says in the article, “The first job of a teacher is to make the student fall in love with the subject. That doesn’t have to be done by waving your arms and prancing around the classroom; there’s all sorts of ways to go at it, but no matter what, you are a symbol of the subject in the students’ minds.”

The teacher being a symbol of the subject is intriguing. It’s like in my business, I am the product I sell. Without me, there would be no Richard The Magician. In many ways, without the teacher, the subject is meaningless for the student.  They won’t care if the teacher doesn’t care.

Using entertainment in the classroom is how teachers could captivate their students. Many of my clients are teachers and librarians. They have told me stories of how they’ve used entertainment in the classroom. One of them used the “magic coloringbook” when teaching her kids to read. The “magic coloringbook” is a trick where an empty coloringbook becomes full of images.

If you are a teacher, here are a 3 ideas that will help you put entertainment in the classroom.

  1. The Sound And Motion Game: Have all the kids stand in a circle. You are to make a sound and motion, and they are to copy you exactly. Once everyone is making the same sound and motion, change it up. After a couple of rounds of this, leave the circle, but have them keep playing. Tell them, “when I tap your shoulder, it is your turn to change the sound and motion.” Go around and start tapping shoulders. Remember, everyone has to do what the leader is doing before you move on. This game teaches leadership, listening, teamwork, and so on. I have played this game with children and adults. Both love it! You can apply the lessons from the game to the classroom. In order for the game to continue, everyone has to play along. Everyone has to contribute. You have to take the lead when it starts your turn. It is just like in the classroom. The class can’t move on until everyone is playing along.
  2. Set The Scene: There are many ways to engage an audience. It’s all about activating their imaginations. You don’t need a big set for this. Something very small and subtle can evoke an image in their minds. Their imaginations will take care of the rest. Music is one of the simplest ways to do this. A little Renaissance style music while reading Shakespeare can go a long way.
  3. Make’em Laugh: Humor is the best way to make people remember something. They will want to remember so they can share the story with their friends. Don’t be afraid to look a little foolish. The hard part is balancing humor and discipline. You can make them laugh, but they need to know you are still in charge.

I knew a math teacher who would teach the kids tricks with numbers. My high-school theater teacher combined funds with the English department. They would bring in an actor who created a one-man Shakespeare show. Other schools have hired me to come in and teach about a subject using magic.

Entertainment in the classroom is essential. What are some other ideas you think would engage students? Have you tried any of the things I’ve mentioned? Please leave your response in the comments.

Post #006: Magic For Sales Meetings

January 16, 2016 by Richard Leave a Comment

3 ways to increase productivity during a sales or staff meeting

I spent a lot of time in the corporate world as a salesperson. I’ve also had experience as being part of a events team. This experience has helped me develop a service as a magician to increase productivity amongst your staff.

Whether you use my services or not, these 3 helpful tips can boost your team’s productivity.

Utilize the Three E’s: Entertain, Educate, and Elevate

Entertain

It is a well known fact that people learn more effectively when entertained. Presenting the message in an entertaining way will increase productivity.

This will require some creative thinking on the part of management. I will happily share some tips on this specific subject in a future post.

Entertainment also helps to break the ice. People come to meetings with baggage. Providing entertainment will increase productivity by creating a more relaxed atmosphere. It will give the staff something to look forward to.

Educate

To increase productivity during a meeting, you need more than entertainment. The Entertainment has to also educate.

Playing a trivia game using your company’s core values can increase productivity. It is educational and entertaining at the same time. It is even more productive when the staff can win money.

The trivia game is just one example. The point is to infuse the primary message into the game.

Elevate

Motivation is an illusion. You can never motivate someone to do something. Motivation comes from within.

Education through entertainment will provide an incentive to stay motivated. Providing entertainment will show your staff you care about them and the company’s message. They will care because you care.

Conclusion

If you are interested in having me come to one of your sales or staff meetings, please follow the link below.
